Help With Fear of Needles & Injections
Don’t let your fear of needles stop you getting the care you need. Try hypnotherapy for needle phobia.
Do you feel sick, faint, panicky or overwhelmed at the thought of having a needle?
Perhaps you avoid blood tests whenever you can. You dread vaccinations. You put off medical appointments because you know an injection might be involved.
Maybe even seeing a needle on television is enough to make you feel uncomfortable.
If your fear is specifically centred around needles, injections, blood tests or cannulas, hypnotherapy may be able to help.
I offer online hypnotherapy for adults who want to reduce a specific needle phobia and feel calmer and more in control when faced with needles.
You know you’re safe, but your body doesn’t seem to know that.
One of the most frustrating things about a needle phobia is that you can completely understand that there is nothing to be afraid of.
You might even tell yourself:
“It’s only a tiny needle.”
“Other people have this done all the time.”
“I know it’s going to be over quickly.”
But when the moment arrives, your body reacts as though you’re in danger.
Your heart races, you feel sick or dizzy, you become tense or shaky and you might feel faint or actually pass out. You desperately want to get away.
And sometimes the fear is so strong that avoiding the situation feels easier than facing it.
This isn’t you being silly or weak. A phobia is an automatic fear response, and automatic responses can be changed.
Is this you?
You may have a needle phobia if you:
- Avoid blood tests even when your doctor has recommended them
- Put off or avoid vaccinations
- Feel extremely anxious about having an injection
- Dread having a cannula fitted
- Feel faint, sick, shaky or panicky around needles
- Can’t look when a needle is being used
- Feel anxious before medical appointments because there might be a needle involved
- Avoid watching needles on television or in films
- Need someone else to accompany you because you’re so frightened
- Have cancelled or postponed appointments because of your fear
- Know logically that you’re safe, but still feel completely overwhelmed
You don’t have to love needles. You just need to be able to cope with them.
The goal isn’t necessarily to make you think:
“I love having injections!”
It’s much more realistic than that.
The aim is to help you develop a different response, so that you can think about a blood test, injection or cannula without your nervous system immediately going into panic or avoidance.
Imagine being able to say:
“I don’t particularly like needles, but I can handle this.”
Being able to attend an appointment without spending days worrying beforehand.
Being able to have a blood test when you need one.
Being able to get a vaccination without the overwhelming fear.
Being able to stay calm enough to let the medical professional do what they need to do.
That’s the kind of freedom we’re working towards.
Why does needle phobia happen?
Phobias can develop for different reasons.
Sometimes there has been a particular experience that your brain has associated with danger.
Sometimes the fear develops gradually.
And sometimes you don’t know where it came from at all.
You don’t necessarily need to remember a specific event for hypnotherapy to be helpful.
Your brain has simply learned:
Needle = danger
And every time you encounter that trigger, the same automatic response can be activated.
Through hypnotherapy and NLP techniques, we can work on changing that learned response and creating a greater sense of calm and control.
My own experience with needle phobia
Needle phobia isn’t something I only understand from a textbook.
My husband lived with an extremely severe needle phobia which began in childhood and only got worse as he got older.
For years, he avoided all blood tests and vaccinations. He couldn’t watch needles being used on television without feeling physically sick.
Eventually, his fear became impossible to avoid when he developed appendicitis and needed urgent surgery. Before the operation could go ahead, blood tests were needed and he would also need a cannula.
He was terrified. He knew he needed medical treatment, but knowing that didn’t make the fear disappear. He called me in tears.
At that point, I talked him through some of the techniques I had learned through my hypnotherapy and NLP training, helping him move out of the overwhelming fear response and anchor a calmer, more resourceful state. Within a short period of time, he had something practical he could use to help him get through the situation.
It wasn’t suddenly easy.
But he did it.
He had the blood tests. He had the cannula fitted. And he was able to go ahead with the surgery he needed.
For me, this experience really brought home just how powerful a phobia can be, and how important it is to have tools that help you manage the response when you need them.
It also highlighted something important:
You have to want to make the change.
My husband had spent years avoiding needles. It was only when he reached a point where he genuinely wanted to overcome the fear, because avoiding it was no longer an option, that he was ready to approach it differently. And that’s something I believe is important when working with phobias.
Nobody else can make this change for you.
If you’re coming because a partner, parent or someone else thinks you should deal with your phobia, you may not be ready yet.
This is for you if you’re thinking:
“I’m fed up with this controlling me.”
“I want to be able to have the blood test I’ve been avoiding.”
“I have a vaccination coming up and I want to handle it differently this time.”
“I’m ready to face this.”
How can hypnotherapy help with needle phobia?
I combine hypnotherapy with NLP techniques to help you change the automatic response associated with your phobia.
Depending on your individual situation, we may work with:
Changing the fear response
We can work on the automatic thoughts, feelings and physical responses that happen when you think about or encounter a needle.
Creating a calmer response
Using techniques such as anchoring and state change, we can help you develop a resourceful state that you can access when you need it.
Working with your imagination
Your brain can respond strongly to imagined situations , which means we can use visualisation to begin practising a different response in a safe and controlled way.
When is a good time to have hypnotherapy for needle phobia?
If you know you have something coming up, such as a blood test, vaccination, dental procedure or another medical appointment involving a needle – that can actually be a useful reason to tackle the phobia now.
Having a specific situation to work towards can give you a clear goal and motivation.
It can also give you the opportunity to put your new skills into practice relatively soon after your sessions.
The important thing is not to leave it until the last minute if you can avoid it.
Giving yourself time to work on the phobia, practise your techniques and build confidence is much better than trying to deal with everything the day before your appointment.
How many sessions will I need?
Every person is different, but for a straightforward, specific needle phobia I would usually recommend around 3–4 sessions.
Some people may need fewer and some may benefit from additional support.
We’ll discuss your individual situation during your initial consultation and decide whether I feel this approach is appropriate for you.
This approach is particularly suited to specific phobias.
If your fear of needles is part of a much wider pattern of health anxiety, general anxiety, panic or other difficulties, you may need a different or more comprehensive approach.
What could change for you?
Imagine:
Booking the blood test you’ve been putting off
Having a vaccination without days of dread beforehand
Being able to have an injection without feeling completely overwhelmed
Staying calm enough for a cannula to be fitted
Going to the dentist without the fear of a needle taking over
Seeing a needle without immediately needing to look away
Knowing that you have tools to help you manage the response
Feeling that you are in control — rather than the phobia
Ready to stop avoiding needles?
If you’re tired of your needle phobia getting in the way of things you need or want to do, you don’t have to keep putting it off.
Whether you have a blood test you’ve been avoiding, a vaccination coming up, or simply want to stop this fear controlling your choices, hypnotherapy could help you approach the situation differently.
